  FEATURED ARTIST- BALLA TOUNKARA

BALLA TOUNKARA & GROUPE SPIRIT
Boston's Ambassador of Malian Music

Balla Tounkara was born 33 years ago into the griot tradition of Mali, the center of the ancient Manding Empire of West Africa. Historically, the griot's role in the Malian Royal Court was to praise the military prowess and honor of the King and his warriors and orally maintain the history of society through music.  Balla, whose ancestors were chiefs of the griots, began to play the kora (the original 21-stringed harp of Africa) as a child, and honed his skills through years of strict discipline and commitment. Under the tutelage of his acclaimed grandfathers Batrou Sekou Kouyate and Samakou Tounkara, he learned to respect the significance of this royal music, becoming a master kora player and vocalist in his own right. Continuing the maintenance of his culture and family history, and the playing of Manding music, fused with modern rock, funk, country, blues, and folk music he listened to as a child remains Balla's passion today.

Balla has played with a host of world reknowned musical artists, including: Youssou N'Dour, Salif Keita, Jimmy Cliff, Baba Maal, Super Rail Band with Djelimady Tounkara, Ali Farka Toure, Oumou Sangare, Ami Koita, Toumani Diabate, Kine Lam, Abdoulaye Diabate, Kandia Kouyate, Habibe Koite, T.J. Wheeler, John Sinclair and others. Past performances range from Good Morning America and the American Blues Festival in the States, to Radio France Internationale and Stadium Mamadou Konate abroad. Speaking out on important, pressing social issues such as AIDS and violence he's raising awarenesss and moving feet and souls along the way!

He and his band Groupe Spirit have been bringing a spicy, eclectic blend of African, Latin, funk, reggae, jazz and blues musical styles to enthusiatic audiences in Boston, New York, and across the country. Groupe Spirit is: Balla Tounkara (kora and lead vocals), Raja Kassis (acoustic and electric guitar), JP Candelier (bass), Joh Camara (djembe), Eric Doob (drums), and Oran Etkin (sax).  Special guest appearances have included Balla Kouyate (ballophone), Patino Vazquez (guitar, tres, vocals), Sali Oyungi (vocals) and Manu Koch (keyboards), Mike Lewis (drums), Andre Brade (drums).

In 2002 the band has been nominated as Outstanding World Music Act at the Boston Music Awards. Balla has released five CD's, including: Kelefaba - The Peacemaker, Traditional Songs for the Kora (1999); Be Right (1999); The World is in Jeoprady (2003); Mali Foly (Balla Tounkara, kora; and Balla Kouyate, balaphone (2004); and Yayoroba (2004). And the track Le Monde est Fou from the CD "Be Right" is included on Putumayo World Music's compilation called "From Congo to Cuba."

"Whether it's funky kora blues, driving soukous-tinged Afropop, or innovative covers of Afropop hits, the group command attention and respect" - Banning Eyre, Afropop Worldwide (for Boston Phoenix)

(West African kora) &
THE MORRIS SANDVIK DUO (voice & lap guitar)
Forsyth Chapel at Forest Hills Cemetery
95 Forest Hills Ave, Boston
617-524-0128 www.foresthillstrust.org

Explore the deeply moving music that gave birth to the blues: Africa's griot tradition and the haunting songs of American slaves. Griot and kora player Balla Tounkara, from Mali, sings ancient ballads - and experiments with modern blues forms. The Morris Sandvik Duo - vocalist Vanessa Morris and lap guitarist Scott Sandvik - evoke what they call pre-Blues: spirituals, surge hymns, hollers and lullabies based on old folk themes. The concert ends with a grand improvisational jam.
